In August of 2002 the South Carolina Department of Insurance (DOI) received a State Planning Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The funding was used to study the medically uninsured in South Carolina. The Department of Insurance was awarded approximately $1.3 million to do the initial data collection, analysis and policy recommendations. In addition, supplemental funds were awarded in September 2003 for the purpose of communicating the results and recommendations to the General Assembly, employers, and citizens of SC. The grant project is slated to end August 31, 2004.
